This in-fill project occupies a lot on one of the busiest avenues in the University Heights District of Newark, New Jersey: Washington Street. The idea for the small density housing structure came from previous unit studies of “packaging” unit components. The unit design stems from the title of “The Box Within The Room” meaning that there is this play between served space and service space.
The units are aggregated in a stacked form representing three cores of unit utility and one core of circulation.
The idea of the simple geometric prism stems throughout the in-fill to the ground level and basement where the box can be seen as another form of space organization.
